original early folk art cupboard with religious figure

With alpine European origin possibly Austrian, Tyrol, south Germany or Bavaria.

The cupboard features a shaped, projecting cornice above a single full-length door, with attractive angled sides and a decorative painted finish extending across the front and sides. The panels are adorned with charming hand-painted floral arrangements, scrolling foliage and colourful botanical motifs, framed by contrasting red borders embellished with delicate cream dots.

The central panel depicts a religious figure with a radiant halo, adding a particularly distinctive and evocative element to the decoration. This combination of religious imagery and stylised flowers is characteristic of traditional folk-art furniture found in parts of Continental Europe, where painted cupboards were valued as both practical household pieces and decorative expressions of local craftsmanship.

Behind the door is a useful fitted interior with open shelves, offering practical storage as well as an attractive display space. The cupboard retains a wonderfully aged appearance, with naturally distressed paintwork, mellowed colours and surface wear that contribute to its authentic antique character.

Dating to approximately 1850–1880, this cupboard is consistent with the tradition of painted furniture produced in rural Central and Eastern Europe during the nineteenth century. Such cupboards were often made by local joiners and decorated by hand, with floral patterns and religious motifs reflecting the beliefs, tastes and artistic traditions of the household.

An eye-catching antique that would sit beautifully in a country house, farmhouse kitchen, eclectic interior or collection of Continental painted furniture. A lovely example of traditional folk-art styling, offering practical storage alongside a wonder.

It’s getting harder to find such beautiful untouched items like this.
