ANTIQUE SWEDISH MORA CLOCK – ATTRIBUTED TO THE EKEGREN WORKSHOP, CIRCA 1800–1845

£1,000.00

A wonderfully tall and characterful antique Swedish Mora-style longcase clock, standing an impressive 2295mm high. Finished in a beautiful aged cream paint, this striking example has an elegant, waisted case with decorative raised panels, moulded detailing and a distinctive shaped hood.
The circular dial is particularly appealing, with its aged, crackled finish, decorative numerals and ornate hands, all adding to the authentic charm of this unusual piece. The convex glass sits within a beautifully moulded circular surround, beneath an architectural-style arched top.
The tall, slender proportions make this a particularly distinctive example, with wonderful decorative presence and the gentle imperfections that come with age.
Mora clocks originate from the Dalarna region of Sweden, particularly the town of Mora, where clockmaking developed into an important cottage industry during the 18th century. Traditionally, local craftsmen produced the clock movements, while painted wooden cases were made by cabinetmakers and other local tradespeople.
These clocks became highly sought after for their elegant shapes and painted finishes. Their characteristic curved bodies and pale colours have since become synonymous with traditional Swedish country-house interiors.
Interestingly, the lettering on this clock appears to read Ekegren and Carlshamn. This may indicate a connection with Jeremias Ekegren, a Swedish clockmaker associated with Karlshamn, whose working life spanned the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This possible attribution requires confirmation from the movement and dial, but it adds an intriguing element to the clock’s history.
Although commonly described as a Mora clock, its maker’s inscription and distinctive case suggest it may be more accurately described as a Swedish painted longcase clock in the Mora tradition.
