Antique Leeway Child’s Rocking Horse

£225.00

A

charming and characterful antique child’s rocking horse, bearing the maker’s transfer stamp for ‘Leeway’, a name associated with traditional British rocking horse manufacture.
Standing at just 660mm (26 inches) high, this is a lovely, smaller example, with a more simple, understated design than the heavily carved rocking horses often seen. The painted cream body has attractive age-related wear and a wonderfully aged appearance, complemented by the red bridle details, original-style green saddle and warm-toned wooden rocking stand.
The horse retains plenty of period charm, with its distinctive painted markings, shaped legs and traditional timber rocking mechanism. Its smaller proportions make it an appealing piece for collectors of antique toys, traditional rocking horses and early childhood memorabilia, as well as an unusual decorative addition to a nursery or country house interior.
A little history
Rocking horses became particularly popular in Britain during the Victorian period, when improved craftsmanship and the growth of the toy trade made them treasured childhood possessions. By the late Victorian and early 20th century, manufacturers produced a wide variety of designs, from elaborate carved horses to simpler painted examples such as this one.
The maker’s stamp is an important feature of this horse, helping to distinguish it from unmarked examples. Its exact date and the history of the Leeway name would benefit from further verification, but its construction, painted finish and traditional rocking stand are consistent with the style of older British toy rocking horses.
The maker’s mark confirms this is a genuine Leeway rocking horse, made by Patterson Edwards, the British toy manufacturer. The Leeway name was introduced around 1926, and production continued until approximately 1970. Leeway horses were known for their simpler carving and bold painted markings, making this smaller example particularly characterist.
Dimensions: 660mm high (26 inches).
